Officers with the OPP have confirmed the victim of a serious assault in Mishkeegogamang First Nation has passed away from their injuries.

The deceased has been identified as 17-year-old Lynnora Mikenak, also known as Lynorra Lawson, of Mishkeegogamang.

The OPP and Nishnawbe Aski Nation police service responded to a Henry Street residence after reports of an assault at 7 a.m. on May 1, airlifted the victim to a nearby hospital, and arrested 32-year-old Jerry Fox of Mishkeegogamang.

Fox was initially charged with aggravated assault and remanded into custody. He remains in custody and additional charges are pending, as the OPP says their investigation is now considered a homicide.

The homicide investigation is ongoing with collaboration from the OPP’s Northwest Region Crime Unit, Nishnawbe Aski Nation Police Service, Northwest Crime Unit and Forensic Identification Services, under the direction of the OPP’s Criminal Investigation Branch.

Mishkeegogamang First Nation, also known as New Osnaburgh or Osnaburgh House, has a reported population of just under 2,000 and is located just south of Pickle Lake.
