Excitement is brewing for a newly founded northwestern Ontario regional spring AAA hockey team, as they travel to Winnipeg this weekend for their first tournament of the season. Mike Sveinson, who serves as an assistant coach for the Wolverines says the gameplan is to have the players get comfortable with each other.
“The one challenge that there is with the kids is the vast majority of them were among the top players on their AA teams all winter and now they have players that are as good or better than they are. The expectation would be that we would do very well at this tournament, we want to try and win it.”
The Wolverines will kick off the tournament today with games against the South Sask Selects, and the Manitoba Kings, before finishing the event tomorrow against the Manitoba Timberwolves.
The Winnipeg Jets have officially been eliminated from the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs. They fell 4-2 to the Hurricanes last night. Since the Jets return to Winnipeg, they have only made the playoffs four times.
The Calgary Flames have their eighth division title in franchise history. Matthew Tkachuk scored his 40th goal of the season as Calgary beat Dallas 4-2 to lock up first place in the Pacific Division. Vancouver dropped a 6-3 decision to Minnesota and Tampa Bay crushed Toronto 8-1. Philadelphia beat Montreal 6-3.
The Toronto Blue Jays will have some momentum entering a three-game weekend series in Houston. Toronto has won two straight after posting a 3-2 win in an afternoon rubber game at Boston. Kevin Gausman pitched into the ninth inning for the victory. Jordan Romano of Markham, Ontario earned his seventh save.
