Staff with the Northwestern Health Unit have confirmed an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Valard work camp in Pickle Lake, who are working on the Wataynikaneyap power project in northwestern Ontario.
Two cases of the virus has been reported, which meets the Ministry of Health’s criteria for a workplace outbreak as there are two confirmed cases within a 14 day period, that have no obvious source of infection outside of the workplace.
The NWHU says they’re working closely with Calgary-based Valard Construction to investigate and ensure control measures are in place. The two individuals are self-isolating, one of them within the region and one outside of it, and contact follow-up is ongoing.
Pickle Lake area residents are asked to practice increased vigilance in their personal protective measures, and the health unit will follow-up if there is any heightened risk to the public.
All residents are asked to follow health measures such as social distancing, wearing a mask, staying away 2 metres from those not in your household, proper hand hygiene and to self-isolate if you develop symptoms.
