Several new fires cropped up this weekend across the Northwest, pushing the number of active fires up to 44 as of Sunday evening.

On Saturday two were discovered in the Red Lake district, one in the Thunder Bay District and, 3 were located in the Nipigon district.

Nine new fires were discovered on Sunday three each in the Nipigon, Thunder Bay and Red Lake districts.

On the bright side, initial attack crews responding to the 15 fire have called six of them out.

Additionally, a pair of fires which have been giving crews a hard time in recent weeks are now being held.

They include:
Sioux Lookout 44 west of Lake St. Joseph where crews continue to consolidate hose lines on priority areas.

Red Lake 28, located 40 kilometres north of Lac Seul First Nation, there hose lines continue to be established while helicopter bucketing support continues.

The fire hazard continues to fluctuate going from a mix of low to moderate with patches of high Sunday evening, to a predominant high across much of the region as of Monday morning.
