The NorWOSSA curling championships are underway in Fort Frances.
First draw action in the boys’ division saw Fort Frances earn a 7-6 win over Kenora’s Beaver Brae, with skip Jackson Marchant notching the game-winning point on a hit and stick in the final end.
In other action, Lake Superior High School from Terrace Bay scored a 4-3 win in an extra end over Michipicoten.
In a battle of Thunder Bay schools, Superior beat Hammarskjold 7-5.
There was just one girls’ division game played, with Fort Frances defeating Red Lake 11-1 in a game that was called after six ends.
A game between St. Patrick and St. Ignatius High Schools from Thunder Bay was postponed due to travel issues.
That game will now take place on Monday at 5 p.m.
A rink representing Longlac’s Chateau Jeunesse has since dropped out.
They were to play Geraldton in their first game.
Instead, the Fort Frances mixed team is filling the spot and beat Geraldton 11-6 in an exhibition match.
Geraldton is still credited with the win over the Longlac school.
The mixed team is expected to continue filling in for exhibition matches but won’t be eligible for the championship.
Monday’s action resumes at 9 a.m. with Fort Frances playing Hammarskjold, Beaver Brae taking on Michipicoten and Lake Superior facing Superior Collegiate in boy’s action.
In the girl’s division, it is Fort Frances up against St. Patrick and Geraldton squaring off with St. Ignatius.
Red Lake will have the exhibition match with the Muskies mixed team.
