The Kenora Salvation Army will soon move from their well-known and well-loved location on Matheson Street to a new space on Main Street South.
The Kenora Salvation Army announced that as of January 24, 2022, they will be located at 133 Main Street South, also known as the old “Tags” location.
“We’ve been actively looking for a space for about five years. The last two years, it has become very, very obvious that we have outgrown our current building. We want to try to keep growing and the only way we could do that was to move to somewhere larger,” said Sandra Poole Community Ministries Director for Kenora, Dryden and Sioux Lookout.
The new location will provide the store with more space, nearly double what they currently have, will give them an opportunity to sell used furniture, and will provide a larger, more prominent, storefront.
“There is a need in the community for low-priced used furniture. We had to discontinue furniture sales in 2015 when our external sorting center was closed due to finances and lack of personnel. Since then, there has been nowhere to purchase affordable used furniture except private Facebook groups and individuals, we’ve had many requests for both furniture donations and clients looking for these items” explains Poole.
The Matheson Street location has been home for the Salvation Army since 1936 back when it was a church sanctuary, and in more recent years, it has been a thrift store for approximately 21 years.
In the press statement, they did continue to say that the Matheson Street Location will remain open and continue to offer food bank assistance and social programming.
One of the programs they are looking to start in the new space is a back-to-school backpack program.
“We have had requests over the years for backpack assistance, and again, with nowhere to operate that program, it wasn’t something we could even consider. That being said, we will be starting this year and that is something we are very excited about being able to introduce,” she concluded.
