Hundreds of front-line healthcare staff at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital had a feast of authentic East Indian cuisine yesterday, thanks to the generosity of a local business owner and Council members.

Jazz Virdi of KURRY brought in his family and Kenora Council members to help prepare a variety of dishes yesterday, before making the delivery to hungry healthcare workers at the hospital as a thank you to front-line staff who have served during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This year, the plan is to feed the entire hospital,” said Virdi. “I’ve had COVID. My daughter’s been sick...and they’re a good team up there. It’s a way for us to say thank you and give back to them, from the community to the hospital.”

KURRY’s cuisine for staff members included authentic and hand-made butter chicken, chana masala, potatoes, rice and naan bread. Virdi adds that he made sure there was enough for not only the day staff, but for the overnight staff to enjoy as well.

This was Virdi and KURRY’s third donation to the hospital after feeding healthcare workers in 2021 and 2020. He also previously raised over $1,500 to help firefighters save wildlife during Australia’s wildfire season in 2019.

To recognize their contributions to the community, Councillors Barb Manson and Kelsie Van Belleghem joined Mayor Andrew Poirier in awarding Jazz and his family with an official Certificate of Recognition.

KURRY was reopened in their new location at 132 Matheson Street South last winter, which Jazz says has been going well so far.

“[The] new location’s going okay. The summer was busy. Winter’s kind of on the decline of course, but the locals have been really, really good in looking after us and helping us out. They always give us well wishes.”

KURRY is open at 132 Matheson Street South on Wednesdays through Saturdays 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sundays between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. You can find more about KURRY HERE.
