The Red Lake Miners have been crowned the champions of the SIHJL!

The Miners hosted the Kam River Fighting Walleye, who are in their first season in the league, in game 6 of the best-of-seven series over the weekend, and finished off the series with a win at home.

Ryan Howe, Nic Bolin and Ethan Poole were the three stars of the game, in Red Lake’s first-ever SIJHL championship. Jaxson Taupert made his playoff debut in the net for the Miners.

The Miners will now get set to head to the Centennial Cup in Estavan, Saskatchewan later this month, against eight other playoff champions throughout the Canadian Junior Hockey League. The tournament was previously known as the RBC Cup.

The Miners defeated the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 3-1 in the semi-final series. The Walleye finished first in the league after 44 games, while the Miners sat second. The Ice Dogs finished third, ahead of Thunder Bay in fourth.

In the MLB, after taking the rubber match with the Houston Astros yesterday, the Toronto Blue Jays will continue their homestand with a three-game series against the New York Yankees beginning tonight. Ross Stripling is scheduled to get the start for the Jays as they welcome in a Yankees club that has won its last nine games straight.

In the NHL, the Stanley Cup playoffs begin this evening with four matchups. The Boston Bruins start their series with the Hurricanes in Carolina at 6, the Toronto Maple Leafs open against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home at 6:30, the Minnesota Wild welcome the St. Louis Blues at 8:30 and the Oilers and L-A Kings kick things off in Edmonton at 9.
