Ontario's NDP are firing back.

They're saying Matt Soprovich from Fort Frances was disqualified from running in Kenora-Rainy River with just cause. The party says the social media postings in question had more to do with violence against women, and the decision wasn't based on a bare bottom or bared chest.

The response comes after Soprovich issued an open letter earlier in the week. In it, he said his campaign to represent the NDP in the riding was derailed by images of his bare bottom or bare chest, as well as a posting about being hungover.

This didn't sit well with the party, who said the reasons for the disqualification were fully justified and went beyond the postings mentioned in the open letter.

"The reason Soprovich has failed the party’s vetting process is because of multiple social media posts that glorified violence against women, or predatory behaviour towards women. In one example, Soprovich compares women to animals, writing 'you might end up hitting them with your car.' In another example, Soprovich describes, in a blog, efforts to prevent a woman from coming to the aid of her sister in a potentially dangerous or compromising situation, saying he was trying to stop her from being a 'cock block,' " it said in a statement from the party.

"We understand Soprovich has claimed that other, perhaps less troublesome, posts were the reason he is not fit to represent our party. Obviously, that’s not the case. We stand behind our decision to work to build a team of candidates that can be trusted not to say or write things that degrade women, or glorify violence against women," the statement continued.
