The newly formed Sioux Lookout Bombers took another step on Thursday (April 22, 2022) towards their inaugural season, hiring their first head coach in franchise history, Carson Johnstone.

Johnstone outlines some of his coaching philosophy, “I believe sincerely that will over skill, commitment to defense, and the team wins championships. I can’t wait to get started and win, here in Sioux Lookout”

He comes to Sioux Lookout from Niagara Falls, Ontario, where he grew up playing minor hockey. He is no stranger to the game, playing at the prep, junior, and college hockey levels, with a stint overseas in Europe.

Following his hockey career, he jumped into coaching while in Europe with multiple minor hockey organizations, and even some junior programs.

Starting his own hockey development company after retiring from playing, Johnstone then followed in his father’s footsteps and started coaching in the Niagara Region with the Fort Erie Meteors and Pelham Panthers of the GOJHL. Most recently, Johnstone spearheaded the establishment of a hockey program at Fort Erie International Academy where he has been the U18 head coach for two years.

“I have always wanted to be a coach.  I love the game more passionately than anybody out there. As a player, captain, and coach I have always wanted to win, I know how to make my team come together and create a dressing room community/culture that allows us to play our best hockey.” Johnstone continues, “I carry those skills I learned in leadership roles throughout my playing career into the dressing room as a coach.”

Leading up to their inaugural Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) season in September, the Bombers will be hosting their Spring ID camp June 24-26, 2022, in Ignace. This will be the first time Johnstone will be able to jump on the ice with potential Bombers players.

Bombers refer to the water bombers operated by the province of Ontario and their crews who have kept Sioux Lookout and the surrounding areas safe from forest fires. The team colours are green, gold and red.
