Police in the far north are investigating a suspicious death.

On May 1, officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service responded to an individual in distress in Deer Lake First Nation, who later passed away.

The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Vanessa Kakekagumick of Deer Lake First Nation. A post-mortem examination is expected to take place to determine her cause of death.

Members of the North West Region OPP and NAPS are continuing to investigate the situation, and believe there is no threat to public safety. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
