Kenora's brother/sister swimming duo Émilia and Gabe Mastromatteo took part in the Swimming Canada Bell Trials in Victoria, BC last week. It was a week filled with success and challenges for both athletes.

In her first competition in three years Émilia competed in 50,100, and 200m Breaststroke, along with the 50,100,200m Backstroke and the 200m Individual Medley.

Coach Janet Hyslop says she will now refocus on her training to be ready for Nationals in the summer with a few racing opportunities in between.

Moving on to her brother and Olympian Gabe was left just shy of the top podium grabbing a silver in the 100m Breaststroke and bronze in the 50m Breaststroke.

Gabe was hoping to get himself onto the Worlds and Commonwealth Teams for the summer but lingering effects of Covid and inability to get the necessary training in time for Trials along with University exams left him just shy of a top podium finish.

Hyslop noted that he too will refocus on his health and training. Gabriel will target the Mare Nostrum International meet in Monaco in May.
