Safe Boating Week in Canada runs May 22 to May 28 and O.P.P. Detachment Commander, Inspector Jeff Duggan urges us to follow these rules before heading out on the water.
“Wear a Canadian approved life jacket or PFD (personal flotation device). Make sure you check the weather conditions and forecast before you go out. Boat or paddle sober and drug-free. Make sure you tell people where you’re going in the event you do get lost. The water is still cold, it’s still in the mid-50’s, so make sure you’re dressing for the weather and be mindful of your boats capabilities and make sure you take a boating course,” said Duggan.
16 million people use boats on Canada’s waterways and these rules need to be followed by everyone.
The O.P.P. Marine Unit is on the water seven days a week and cover approximately 100,000 square kilometres of Ontario lakes and rivers.
