The extension of wage subsidies will help resorts and lodges in the district. Kenora MP Eric Melillo says it's going to be a tough summer for many in the tourism sector.

"We do also understand that more needs to be done for those, who may not be able to open their doors this summer," he said, noting many have already lost bookings, due to the pandemic.

Before last week's announcement, the wage subsidies were set to end in early June, which left resorts and lodges in limbo.

Since travel between communities is still being discouraged, Melillo is backing calls for staycations. They would see area residents take advantage of vacancies at resorts left by visitors from the U-S or Western Canada.
